2021 is about to become more epic than ever. According to Deadline, Fortnite developer Epic Games will lend its Unreal Engine technology for an upcoming animated feature that will follow Gilgamesh, the ancient Mesopotamian mythological demi-god who failed in his quest for immortality. The project will involve Latin American animation studio Hook Up and Argentinian firms DuermeVela and FilmSharks.
There are many versions of the myth, but the most famous is the one told in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The titular hero is the ruthless king of the city of Uruk. One day, he is challenged by Enkidu, a formidable warrior who defeats Gilgamesh in a duel before the two become close friends. Together, they carry out a plethora of impressive deeds, including defeating many mythical creatures. One day, Enkidu gets sick, and Gilgamesh starts his journey to find the secret of immortality. He won’t succeed in his action, and the two friends will see each other again only in the afterlife. The myth had a profound influence on Western culture, including elements of key touchstones like the Old Testament and Homer’s Odyssey.
Argentinian filmmaker Tomas Lipgot is directing the movie, which will come both in an English and a Spanish version.
“It’s an honour to see Epic Games supporting Gilgamesh through the Epic MegaGrants program,” FilmSharks CEO Guido Rud said. “Although animation has done an excellent job of entertaining through comedy and colorful creatures, there is also a huge appetite and opportunity to share cultural stories and tell larger-than-life mythical tales.”
The producers have yet to announce the official release date for the film.
