Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch on Maria Rambeau’s ‘Superhero Quality’

While Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch’s character, Maria Rambeau, doesn’t have any conventional superpowers of her own, the actor believes the character appears a much more relevant kind of superhero.

Maria, who serves as Carol Danvers’ best friend and fellow Air Force fighter pilot, will be a single mother in the film with Lynch regarding this development as giving her character immense inner strength as she balances her career and family commitments.

“Her being a fighter pilot along with a single mother is her superhero quality. That is absolutely her superpower,” observed Lynch in an interview with Nerdist. “Being a single mother, especially a Black single mother, having been raised by one and my grandmother, I know that there’s just a certain type of strength that comes ancestrally.”

With promos for the film revealing Maria’s daughter Monica Rambeau, who has her own superhero future in the Marvel Universe, Maria’s example as a career single mother may inform the next generation of MCU superheroes with Lynch teasing the possibility of Monica becoming the Marvel superhero Photon.

“She’s strong, she’s bold, she’s a Black single mother. She doesn’t argue about it,” Lynch continued. “She has raised an amazing child and now this child is probably going to turn out to be a superhero because she’s been raised by one.”

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives on March 8, 2019.
