Zombieland 2 is in production 10 years after the first zombie comedy hit theaters. Despite the long wait, the entire cast is returning for the sequel, and Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch is joining the fun.
Middleditch has signed on as one of three major new cast members to the film, according to Variety. He joins the previously announced Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy) and Rosario Dawson (Sin City). All four original cast members — Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin — are back as well.
The first Zombieland saw Tallahassee (Harrelson) and Columbus (Eisenberg) meet a pair of sisters in Wichita (Stone) and Little Rock (Breslin) during the zombie apocalypse. It will be interesting to see the changes made for the sequel, since Breslin was 12 when the original movie was released.
Staged as a comedy, the movie mostly focused on the turmoil between the four leads, with the zombies as background noise. Plus, Bill Murray played himself and actually pretended to be a zombie at one point in the movie.
Ruben Fleischer, who directed the original Zombieland and had huge success with the 2018 Marvel Comics movie Venom, will return to direct the sequel. The original screenwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, are also returning. They most recently worked on both Deadpool movies.
The original movie ranks up there with Shaun of the Dead as success stories in the world of zombie comedies. The movie made $102 million worldwide on a budget of $23.6 million.
While that first movie was mostly about the relationships between the dysfunctional human survivors, it did end with a giant fight for survival against a zombie herd at an old amusement park. The sequel will up the threat.
According to the synopsis, Zombieland: Double Tap will feature “super zombies” that have evolved from the undead zombies that appeared in the first movie. The survivors from that original movie are now zombie slayers and meet some new human survivors to battle both the new zombies as well as their “snarky, makeshift family.”
This isn’t the first time that Fleisher has tried to get a sequel going. Back in 2013, there were heavy rumors that it would arrive as a TV series instead. That never happened and now the movie is finally coming to theaters.
Production for Zombieland: Double Tap commenced in January, so the addition of Thomas Middleditch and the rest of the cast is timed perfectly to start shooting. The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters this October — exactly 10 years since the first movie hit theaters.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer with a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Zombieland: Double Tap stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutch. The movie is scheduled to be released on Oct. 11.
