James Gunn Confirms Coronavirus Hasn’t Affected ‘The Suicide Squad’ Schedule Yet

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has confirmed that the film is still on track to release on its original date despite the coronavirus pandemic causing widespread delays all over the industry.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused quite the number on the film industry, resulting in theatres all around the globe shuttering its doors and numerous productions going on pause, including DC’s very own The Batman. Despite being finished, numerous films have been delayed their theatrical releases, with Wonder Woman 1984 being the most prominent to adjust its release date. One film that isn’t on track to be delayed because of the coronavirus is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, at least for now.

Over on Twitter, a fan asked The Suicide Squad director if the film would be delayed because of the current cinematic landscape. In two separate tweets, James Gunn stated that the only reason the film would be delayed at this frontier is because of VFX but at this current junction, it’s on track for its 2021 release date.

The prime reason as to why the film is still on track is because the James Gunn project completed filming in late February, before the coronavirus pandemic hit its peak. Beyond that, the film has a lengthy post-production schedule which means that Gunn and the VFX team have tons of time to perfect the next entry in the DC franchise. Of course, the coronavirus situation is changing everyday, so nothing should be considered set and stone until its spread tempers.

The first film followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.
