‘Mortal Kombat’ Writer Greg Russo Teases ‘Bloody’ Fight Scenes

Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo teased that the fights in the new film will be bloody and that the series has never looked better.

After a fan tweeted their disappointment over not seeing a Mortal Kombat movie as brutal as the modern games, the scribe behind the new film teased that fans of the franchise won’t be disappointed with the level of violence in the reboot. The video game series sees players fight as different champions from a number of realms in a deadly tournament. And if writer Greg Russo is to be believed, the film will be just as brutal.

One fan on Twitter expressed a desire to see the badass cutscenes in the games make their way to the big screen. The tweet quickly caught Russo’s attention, pointing out that the new film is well on its way, calling it “bloody.” He also jokingly pointed out that fans should forget the game’s cutscenes, since the series “has never looked this good.” It sounds like the film is aiming for an R-rating, so hopefully the legendary fatalities will be as brutal as possible.

The Mortal Kombat franchise launched with the first video game in 1992 and has since expanded to include several sequels. Plot details for the new Mortal Kombat film are currently unknown, though the video games center on a roster of characters from different realm who fight for supremacy.

The video game was first adapted into a Mortal Kombat feature film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film earned a worldwide total of $122 million and is widely regarded as one of the better adaptations of a video game.

Directed by Simon McQuoid from a script written by Greg Russo, Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax,  Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Sisi Stringer Mileena, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Lewis Tan in an undisclosed role.

Mortal Kombat is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 15, 2021.
