With just one episode to go, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has almost wrapped up. The latest Marvel Studios series introduced the character of the Flag-Smasher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike in the comics, Marvel opted to turn Karl Morgenthau into Karli Morgenthau, and signed breakout actress Erin Kellyman to portray her. After explaining in a recent interview with CBM that working on a big set like the one from Solo: A Star Wars Story helped her in preparing for the scope of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Kellyman revealed the homework she did.
“I did look into Karl specifically,” she said. “I didn’t go ahead and read like a full comic or anything like that, but I researched his character a little bit. I wanted to read it and understand the basics of him, but I also wanted to stay away a little bit because they are so different now, and she has been rewritten into this whole different person. I didn’t want to get the two mixed up.”
Then the actress spoke about the villains she took inspiration from for her character. The first name that came to her mind was that of Thanos, the Mad Titan.
“It’s tricky because I feel like Karli is quite different from your typical villain,” she added. “I guess Thanos as well had a similar thing. He was trying to do a good thing. He didn’t need to get rid of the 50% of the world’s population, but instead, that was the right thing to happen in order for people to have a good community…to get rid of half of the world’s population. I guess, him, in a way it’s quite similar, in that the root of what Karli’s doing is for a good thing.”
Kellyman concluded that, unlike Thanos, Karli doesn’t want to wipe out half of the world’s population. She and her companions are merely fighting for a more just world.
The first episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are already on Disney+. The sixth and final episode will debut on April 23.
