Hulu Exec Says the Future of M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey is Up To Marvel

Marvel Television as we once knew it ceased to exist in 2019 after corporate restructuring led to its folding into Marvel Studios. Regardless, the House of Ideas’ TV division managed to eke out a few more shows in the two years since its closure. The studio’s final live-action project, Helstrom, was swiftly canceled after airing one season on Hulu in 2020. But last year, Hulu premiered two new animated series that were made outside of Kevin Feige’s purview: M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey. Unfortunately, it sounds like not even Hulu’s top executives know whether these shows will return with new episodes.

Hulu Originals chief Craig Erwich recently answered questions during the platform’s winter TCA presentation. And when asked about the future of its Marvel programming, he indicated that renewals for M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey are out of his hands. Instead, that decision is entirely Marvel’s call. You can read what he had to say (courtesy of Decider’s Alex Zalben) below.

M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey were the only two shows that emerged from Hulu and Marvel’s 2019 partnership that greenlit four new animated series. Characters from these shows were eventually supposed to team up in a crossover special dubbed The Offenders. But once Howard the Duck and Tigra & Dazzler were scrapped, these plans ultimately fell by the wayside. Hulu and Marvel previously collaborated on Runaways, which ended its three-season run in 2019. They were also developing a Ghost Rider series that would have had Gabriel Luna reprise his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. role as Robbie Reyes. However, that show stalled before it could even start filming.

For now, the real question is whether Marvel is willing to share its IP outside of Disney+. Hulu has always seemed like the ideal destination for the studio’s more adult-oriented productions. But if Marvel wants to keep its content under one roof, it could spell doom for M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey.
