Justice League Concept Artist Reveals New Snyder Cut Character Designs

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Zack Snyder’s Justice League!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League was big, but it was almost a lot bigger. In addition to its six main heroes and the terrible twosome of Darkseid and Steppenwolf, the movie featured cameo appearances by several other DC characters. And if Snyder had his way, his four-hour opus would have had walk-on (or fly-on) roles for even more fan-favorites.

Production designer Jojo Aguilar, who worked as a concept artist on Snyder’s movie, recently dusted off his sketchbook to share some of his designs for a few characters who had smaller parts in the film. But more notably, he included an illustration of an A-lister who didn’t make the final cut. That would be John Stewart, a.k.a. the Green Lantern.

Snyder previously revealed that John Stewart originally had J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter’s role in Justice League. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. forbade him from including the character because of their plans to use him in another DC project. Clearly, Snyder already had an actor in mind to bring John Stewart to life in the movie. But it’s hard to make out who it was from Aguilar’s illustration. Check it out for yourself below.

Aguilar included his design for Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter as well, looking almost exactly as he did in the finished film. Fans can also see his take on Granny Goodness, who appeared beside Darkseid in the movie (albeit without any dialogue of her own). Additionally, Aguilar shared his original idea for Jared Leto’s Joker, essentially photoshopping an image of his head from Suicide Squad onto a new body. In this version, the character’s face is burned and he’s wearing an old-timey gun belt over a white tuxedo. However, it looks like the filmmakers had him wear a bulletproof vest during the Knightmare scene instead.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now streaming on HBO Max.
