The studios announced the film last summer and revealed that it takes place two centuries before the events of The Hobbit. The story follows Helm Hammerhand, the ninth King of Rohan who eventually lent his name to the fortress known as Helm’s Deep. Viewers will discover the fortress’ origins in the film as well. Additionally, Variety has shared an early look at concept art from the movie, which you can view below. Voice actors are expected to be announced in the near future.

Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) is still attached to direct The War of the Rohirrim with producer Joseph Chou, whose Sola Entertainment banner is overseeing the animation. Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou are writing the screenplay based on an earlier draft by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Gittins also happens to be the daughter of original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy co-writer Philippa Boyens, who is also onboard as an executive producer. Oscar-winning VFX designer/makeup artist Richard Taylor is working on the film as well with longtime Tolkein illustrator John Howe.
“I’m in awe of the creative talent who have come together to bring this epic, heart-pounding story to life, from the mastery of Kenji Kamiyama to a truly stellar cast,” said Boyens in a statement.
“The Lord of the Rings films took Tolkien’s masterwork to new cinematic heights and inspired a generation,” added Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”
